I think the hardest part about writing about Black film, especially from a historical context, is the weight one feels to get the whole thing right. That is, it requires quite a bit of curation, relying on asking yourself whether you’re acknowledging the multiplicity of Black voices and views, what the consequences are if you leave someone or something out, and will this be the only time someone writes on this subject.

I’m currently writing a Martin Luther King Jr Day piece that on its surface appears to be quite simple but is actually filled with so many landmines.
